Who We Are

Washington State Association of Youth Courts (WSAYC) is committed to assisting youth in bringing justice to their peers throughout Washington state. WSAYC is made up of the established and newly forming youth courts in Washington State.

Youth courts are diversion processes in which young people sentence their peers for juvenile offfenses, traffic violations, truancy, school rule violations and other misconduct. Individual youth courts have existed for many years in Washington state.

In 2002, the Washington State Administrative Office of the Courts, in conjunction with the Washington State Bar Association's Council on Public Legal Education, began hosting statewide trainings and start-up conferences for communities interestered in or already operating youth courts. Margaret Fisher from the AOC and the Council on Public Legal Education headed up this effort.

WSAYC regularly receives financial support from the Washington Judges Foundation and has in the past been funded by the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
